This exhibition will feature medieval and Renaissance treasures ranging in date from the late Roman Empire to about 1600. These works were originally intended for the embellishment of the church and chapel in the Middle Ages, and for the cabinet of wealthy Renaissance collectors. Even then, these precious works were highly prizes for their beauty, the value of their materials and for their exquisite workmanship. Included are 44 superb works in various media-ivory, wood, bronze, metalwork, stained glass, and manuscripts – one of the unique masterpieces is an illustrated sketchbook by Leonardo da Vinci known as the Foster Codex III.
